"Nitika" is indian for "Angel of the
precious stones". Nitika is about 22 years old and a stout
pony, 13 hands. She found herself in a kill pen in Pennsylvania. She is
steadily gaining weight now and the slight heaves she arrived with is
responding extremely well to the tri-hist and cough free regimine.
Perhaps she was fed dusty hay. This has been a horrific year for
hay. Due to the possible heaves, she must be kept in an environment as
dust free as possible and having her hay soaked would be a huge benefit.
Actually all horses benefit from it!
Nitika is seeking a backyard type
situation where attention and love are plentiful and riding is light.
Senior feeding diet is required. She gets along well with other horses.
Update from Tika!
Christine,
I just wanted to give a
quick update regarding Tika. She is settling in nicely. She is getting
2 pounds of Equine Senior per day. I will hold her here for a couple
days and bring her up to the 3. She is eating the wet down timothy hay
2x per day in the hay rack outside with Bo. They are actually sharing
the hay now which they wouldn't do the first day or so. At night I give
them a small bucket of the Triple Crown Safe Starch. It is a chopped
hay like the Dengii but doesn't have the sweetener so I don't have the
mice problem I get when I have the Dengii. For some reason they love
it. I love the smell of the Safe starch. Again, it isn't sweet, it is
just chopped hay.
Tika is letting me
approach her with no problems. She doesn't run away. She is doing
great in the stall. She is happy in or out. Doesn't fuss at all. So
far everyone who has seen her loves her. She is a sweetie. She would
back off when I tried to fix her forelock. She is now letting me touch
her forelock and mane. This is when she is free to walk away. I want
her to get used to the idea of being touched and then I will work on
grooming her.
I am really enjoying
working on getting her to trust me. I am so used to horses that you
just walk up, groom and ride.

I have been so busy and
it looks like from your website you have been extremely busy. It looks
like your fund raiser went well.
I thought I would send
some recent pictures of Nitika. She has settled in nicely with Bo.
They hang out together all the time. Recently, I looked outside and saw
Bo in his stall eating but something was under his neck. I walked out
and there was Nitika underneath him stealing some of his grain out of
his feed bucket. (August 30th, 2008)

Hi Christine,
I just wanted to send you
a quick note to say Nitika is still doing great. The vet (Andressen)
came last month for shots and said she looks fantastic. She still
continues to trust more and more as the months go by. She seems happy
in her routine. She 'steals' some of Bo's food and has put on a little
weight. I try and encourage him to finish his food so she doesn't get
too round!!
She has gotten fuzzy this
winter. Nitika enjoys the freedom of going in and out of her stall
though she spends most of the time outside. She enjoys the guinea fowl
passing through her paddock twice a day. My dog walking around her
doesn't phase her in the least. She just seems really content!
I keep up with your news
with the emails you send and the website. I am sorry for your losses but
I am happy to know that the horses who spend the last years of their
life have made it to your farm.
