Nicky
"In The Nick of Time " A.K.A. "Nicky" Born 2005
Move Arrow Over Picture to See
Nicky before he Arrived at AFER

Nicky Has Been Adopted! Congratulations Patty!

Total nightmare from the beginning.
This gentlest of
all souls was born as a by-product to the PMU industry.
Pregnant mom had
to live standing on a pee-line until she delivered this special boy.
3
short months later, he found himself with over 100 other foals,
all ripped
from their mom's sides and shoved in together to await shipment...
either
to a home some horse rescue somewhere secured...
or to the slaughterhouse.
Little Nicky's time had run out when he was the last one left unclaimed
and he was doomed.
We just about tore down walls to save this boy and then
had to wait for the trailer to fetch him.
Well, Little Nicky managed to
arrive home with a broken bone sticking out of his leg and a wound the
size of a dinner plate.
Seems the PMU farmer was just too busy to take even a
glance at the poor boy and so never noticed the extraordinary injury.
This little horse will mature about 15.2h and is a
Quarter horse, liver chestnut in color
and without a doubt, the very gentlest creature you
will ever meet.
He should heal up fine thanks to Dr. Andresen's
intervention.
Nicky was blessed by a man named Ron Delsener who paid for him to have
surgery at the
Long Island Veterinary Hospital in order to geld him as he
was a cryptochid.
He now has a healthy body, mind and spirit and a HOME
with a FAMILY that adores him!
His whole life is ahead of him and he is
finally ready to live it.
We are grateful to be a part of such an
adventure
as this little horse has had!

With
his new buddy!

Update September 2007: Nicky has been renamed
YooHoo and he has topped off at 15.2h solid. He is now working under
saddle and is a dream. He is sweet and brave and protects his best
buddy friend named Karma. He lives upstate New York on a farm. We
are steadily updated regarding his progress.
Nicky's testimonial:
We weren't looking for another horse. REALLY.
But if you believe in love at first sight, which my daughter and I now
do, it hit us hard!
A friend of ours was looking for a horse and invited us to go with her
to see what this rescue place, Amaryllis Farm had. Walked into the barn
and were greeted by several very friendly people, I know Christine had
to be one of them, but I was distracted by a very nice looking liver
chestnut rear end. Went to that stall, there he was, In the Nick of
Time. He allowed me to scratch and scratch and scratch some more,
swaying back and forth, dust and hair coming off, leaning against the
stall door, and when I stopped, he turned his beautiful head around ,
bushy forelock in his eyes, as if to say I needed to keep scratching.
I don't think we saw any other horses that day. Just Nicky.
I learned that he was on stall rest recovering from surgery, and then
that when he first arrived in New York from North Dakota that he had a
bone sticking out of his leg. He must be one of the luckiest horses in
the world, I'm sure not many people would have given him a chance, but
Christine did. The only outward sign of that injury is a scar on his
leg, but it doesn't have any effect on him at all.
From that point forward, I couldn't believe I started the adoption
process by filling out the paperwork, wondering how Nicky would get
along with my other three horses, knowing he would eventually be the
perfect horse for my daughter Emma.
I got the immediate impression that Christine could match horses to
people very well and was thrilled when my friend (remember her, the one
who was really looking for a horse?) told me Christine wouldn't have any
problems letting us adopt Nicky. I don't think I stopped smiling for two
weeks.
We set up a day and time when we could pick him up, he loaded fairly
well and was really excited when we arrived at the barn in Yaphank. One
by one, he met our other horses. It was a little rocky at first with my
older horse, also a gelding who has owned me for 20 years. He thinks
he's king of the world. Nicky has now become Kid's buddy. It's only
taken two years.
Overall, our experience with Amaryllis Farm and Christine has been so
wonderful, we've recommended them to so many people looking for
horses...
I can only wish you the best, and thank you, thank you, thank you for
allowing us to bring Nicky home to live with us.
Patty
